Peter Pillow is a delightful children’s book by Jon Sniderman that has an appealing and entertaining storyline.  Once children hear this story and see the vibrant and appropriate illustrations by Juan Carlos Colla, I believe they will crawl into bed and see their pillows in a new light.  Perhaps they will even see “Peter Pillow.”

The creativity and imagination of the author brings Peter Pillow alive on the first page as he (the pillow) looks forward to the two children coming to bed.  Though the bedtime activities are always similar, Peter Pillow enjoys the attention he gets from the two kids.  There is even more fun when the father comes in to say goodnight to the children and gives Peter Pillow additional attention.  Flop, fluff, turn around and fix—they all love playing with Peter Pillow and fixing him just right.  After this fun time together, the father gives his kids goodnight hugs and kisses, and they quickly go to sleep with the pillow molding himself comfortably around their necks.

But what happens when the expected doesn’t happen?  How does Peter Pillow react when, one night, the children don’t come into their bedroom?  They don’t seem to be anywhere in the house. Upset and unhappy, the pillow falls asleep, worried and distressed.  When will the children return home?

This story reminded me of my son who, as a toddler, carried around a pillow at all times.  His name was Buddy the Pillow, but I bet Buddy and Peter provided the same kind of fun and comfort to their human friends.

This book is well-written, wonderfully designed, and should help parents get their children to bed on time as they make friends with the pillows on their bed and do their own fluffing, flopping, fixing, and turning around.  I recommend Peter Pillow as a great and imaginative resource for children who enjoy picture books.
