In reading A Journey To The Truth by Sohrab ChamanAra, I found that I was enjoying the company of Sam, the main character, as he traveled through the years of his life, searching for answers, learning from experiences and, above all, being real with his deeds, words, and thoughts.

In 1947 Sam was born into poverty, but his parents provided him with riches that could not be assigned a monetary value; he was given love, a Christian upbringing, and a vision for the future.  He lost his poppa at the tender age of ten, and then his mother passed when he was entering high school. After living a short time with an aunt and uncle who sacrificed to help him, he was given the opportunity to serve as an acolyte at the church where he and his parents had worshiped.  Reverend Brown provided him with a cot in the basement, food to eat, and privacy where he could read church books and feed his quest for truths regarding God and the hereafter.  It would be a quest that eventually introduced him to the religions of Abraham—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—and also to the Dharma Religions of Hinduism and Buddhism, as well as the writings of Tolstoy and Gandhi.

With the support of some special people, Sam manages to earn a living and attends a university where he obtains a degree in engineering. During his senior year of school, he falls in love and marries a young woman who was to be the love of his life.  As his career with US Steel takes off, he is shocked and brokenhearted when his wife suddenly walks out on him.  Even with this personal tragedy, he becomes a very successful stockbroker, earning much wealth through wise investments. Moving to LA in the late seventies, he appears to have it all but he doesn’t forget his roots and helps those from his past in various ways, putting his money and talents to good use.

After barely surviving a major earthquake, Sam is left penniless by the stock market crash of 1987.  Having no choice, he takes a menial job to survive—one similar to the job that helped him get his start some twenty years earlier.  Though his lifestyle has changed his study of various religions continues, and he finds himself intrigued by the poetry of Rumi.  A new friend, Sohrab, assists him in his search for the truth.

Does Sam ever find the truth he has been seeking all his life?  Does he ever find personal love again?  Does he regain any of his fortune?  All three of these questions can be answered in the affirmative. His journey is not a straight one but, even with all the twists and turns, he regains all that he has lost—and more!  His desire, as well as that of a woman he loves, is to use his wealth to benefit others.  Personal charity work, an educational emporium, politics and the hosting of a very successful radio talk show are some of the ways he attempts to reach out to the community—to the world.  Sam becomes very excited about a plan for promoting the common ground of all religions and healing divisions in his community.  Though his plan does not materialize as planned, he does do something very different that yields surprising results. And Sam?  Well, he finally finds what he has been looking for; he now has peace and serenity in knowing that he is part of the Whole.

This book is extremely well-written and the characters are quite believable.  It moves at a steady pace and, in my opinion, Sam asks questions that many of us have pondered from time to time.  Though a book of fiction, it is well-researched and based upon much factual material.
